What is Acquire?

Acquire is a board game designed by Sid Sackson and first published in 1964. Players place tiles on a grid to found hotel chains, buy stock in those chains and cash in when they merge. There are no dice: almost everything depends on reading the board, choosing where to put your money and guessing what your rivals will do next.

That mix of simple turns and deep decisions is why Acquire is still considered one of the great strategy games, sixty years after it came out. A full game usually takes well under an hour online.

How to play on Acquire VIP

Rules in one minute

Everyone starts with $6,000 and six tiles. On your turn you place one tile on the 12×9 board, buy up to three shares and draw a new tile. Put a tile next to a loose tile and you found one of the seven chains, earning a free share. Chains grow as tiles are added, and their share price rises with their size.

When a tile connects two chains, the bigger one takes over the smaller one. The largest and second-largest shareholders of the chain that disappears collect bonuses, and everyone decides whether to sell, trade or keep those shares. A chain with 11 or more tiles is safe from takeovers. Once a chain reaches 41 tiles, or every chain on the board is safe, the game can end: final bonuses are paid, all stock is sold and the richest player wins.
